CORVALLIS REGIONAL 9-1-1 COMMUNICATIONS CENTER
CALLING GUIDE

DIAL 9-1-1:

  • Tell the dispatcher (operator) what the emergency is. Is police, fire or ambulance needed?
  • Wait for further instructions from the dispatcher.
  • DO NOT hang up until the dispatcher tells you to, UNLESS you need to do so to keep yourself safe.

WHAT IS AN EMERGENCY?

  • Any serious medical problem (chest pain, seizure, bleeding, unconsciousness). **You may be given emergency medical pre-arrival instructions**
  • Any type of fire (business, car, building, dumpster, bark dust).
  • Any life-threatening situations (fights, people with weapons, etc.)
  • Any crime in progress, or crime that JUST occurred and suspect was observed.
  • When in doubt, CALL 9-1-1. The dispatcher will assist you, possibly by redirecting your call.

WHAT INFORMATION WILL THE DISPATCHER NEED?

  • The location and/or address where assistance is needed. Be specific - exactly where inside the library? PBX does not transmit location data. Upstairs, Children’s area, restroom, east side, west side, etc.
  • Your name and phone number.
  • The nature of the emergency.
  • Descriptions of suspects, involved vehicles, or additional information. **Always listen to the dispatcher for guidance. Information is entered into a computer and often dispatched by another dispatcher. Emergency responders may arrive while you are still talking to the dispatcher.
