Child pornography and identity theft are examples of computer crimes investigated by the Corvallis Police. Because of the increase in complexity of all types of computer crimes, the Corvallis Police Department is in need of a large pool of high-capacity hard disk drives. You or your company/organization can help combat pornography and other computer crimes by donating an operable hard disk drive over 40 GB in size.
When the Corvallis Police seize computers for evidence in cases of child pornography or other computer crimes, the Investigations Unit performs a forensic examination of the hard disk drive(s) on those computers. Evidence gathered from the seized computers is then stored on Departmental hard disk drives until the case is prosecuted and closed.
Some seized computers have enormous numbers of huge files that drain the Department’s resources to store evidence. Consequently, the Department needs hard disk drives at least 40 GB in size.
To insure evidence integrity CPD uses specialized software that completely removes all data from hard disks before the disks are used for evidence storage. Likewise, this software will be used on all donated drives to erase all information without review or examination. To assure donor privacy, the Corvallis Police will not look at any information on donated drives.
You can donate new or recyclable 40+ GB disk drives to CPD through Friends of Corvallis Police, Inc., a 501(c)3 Oregon corporation. Donations are tax-deductible. Drives can be dropped off at the Law Enforcement Center, 180 NW 5th St or at 460 SW Madison Ave., Suite 9. Drives can also be mailed to Varien Tilton, Corvallis Police Department, 180 NW 5th St., Corvallis, OR 97330.
